Social SKills with Mrs. Luzzi @HVRSD
The basis of our social skills program in HVRSD is "Social Thinking," by Michelle Garcia Winner. For the past couple of years, in addition to running small social skills groups in the speech room, there have also been social skills groups run in several K-5 classes. The students and teachers are now familiar and comfortable with the social language that is used. Certain key phrases are used that enable our students to self-monitor their behavior, their social connectivity and their attention and cognitive presence in learning and social situations.

Whole Body ListeningWhole Body Listening is also a key component of the "Social Thinking" program and is used in many of our classrooms. Catch phrases can be very effective in shaping positive behavior. "Whole Body Listening" encompasses several components of "Expected Behavior:" eyes on the speaker, ears listening, quiet mouth, quiet hands, feet and body. When our students hear something like, "I hope everyone is remembering to use Whole Body Listening," they immediately turn towards the speaker, stop talking and making noises, and quiet their bodies (Okay, not everyone does right away, but most do!) Below are two graphic reminders of Whole Body Listening. The first depicts Listening Larry from a series of books based on "Social Thinking" and written by Wilson and Sautter, that reinforces the program's concepts. I found it on Pinterest, but if you like it and want to find more books that support your child's social skills, you can find them on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Whole-Body-Listening-Larry-Home/dp/0982523173). The second picture is also a good reminder, but I am unsure of it's origin.
