Welcome to my web-site! This web-site is a resource created for parents and students to provide you with a better understanding of different areas of speech and language. It will provide you with resources to help improve these areas in fun and interesting ways, since like most new skills, the more you practice, the more improvement you'll see.
As a college student, I was taught an easy way to remember the areas that typically fall under speech therapy: FLAV. That stands for Fluency, Language, Articulation, and Voice. At this point, I have focused on Articulation and various aspects of Language on this site, although the Relaxation and Breathing exercises are often used with Fluency and Voice students as well as those who come to me for Articulation.
Articulation refers to how we produce the sounds of speech. Sometimes, you'll hear the sounds referred to as phonemes. On the Articulation Education page, there is an explanation of how articulation therapy works. Linked to that are sub-pages with word and picture lists for practice with specific sounds.
Language is a broader heading. It refers to the ability to understand and use words to effectively communicate. Language areas on this site will encompass vocabulary growth, grammar, semantics (word meanings and relationships), auditory processing (answering WH questions, following directions, comprehension), and pragmatic language and social skills. At a later date, more information will be added in the areas of Fluency and Voice.
Social Skills are addressed under the heading of "Socially Skilled." At our school social skills are being taught on most grade levels and the terminology and strategies in this area are very effective in building self-regulation and a greater sense of community there.
On the last two pages there are apps and computer links to help enhance speech, language and social development. There is also information for parents regarding community resources and on-line resources regarding subjects related to special needs children.
I hope you find this web-site helpful. I am very happy to be able to share this information with you all in one place.
